DESCRIPTION:With the Carolina Civic Center Historic Theater closed to live audiences due to the governor’s executive order greatly limiting in-person crowd sizes\, the theater’s very popular annual “A Robeson County Christmas Show” will temporarily be transformed into a virtual streaming link option to be purchased and viewed from the cozy comfort of your home.\n\n\n\nWatching A Robeson County Christmas Show Virtual Special at home will be reminiscent of “old school” television Christmas specials. It will include a mix of new performances and top rated selections from last year’s edition. Featured artists recorded on the theater’s stage will also include \nLakota John\, Alexis Jones and Kendrix Singletary!\n\n\n\n\nThis year\, our annual heart-warming holiday musical revue will be available through the theater’s etix ticketing platform for $15\, and will be valid for the entire purchased date (you can view the special on demand during the 24-hour window\, after which it disappears)\, December 18\, 19\, 20 and 25. There will be a link to view the stream in your ticket purchase confirmation email. An email address is needed to receive the streaming link. Streaming Links can be purchased through the theater’s web site at https://www.etix.com/…/carolina-civic-center-historic… or by phone\, 1:00pm-5:30pm weekdays at 910.738.4339.\n\n\n\nThe annual Christmas show\, now in its ninth year\, has become one of the region’s most popular holiday traditions\, with 10 performances selling out last year. To continue this community spirit\, the theater’s supporters and fans are encouraged to take photos of themselves\, families and pets in front of their Christmas decorations (in holiday-themed sweaters and pajamas\, if the spirit so moves) and post or tag the Carolina Civic Center Historic Theater on Facebook.\n\n\n\nTicket purchasers will be entered into a $50 gift card drawing announced at the conclusion of each show on our Facebook platform.\n\n\n \n

SUMMARY:What’s Going On: The Marvin Gaye Experience
DESCRIPTION:SEASON TICKETS GO ON SALE 12PM AUGUST 1! General on sale August 12 \nAs one of the pioneers of Motown\, singer-songwriter and producer Marvin Gaye helped shape the sound of R&B music and is considered one of the greatest artists of all time. Soul man Brian Owens is often referred to as the “second coming of Marvin Gaye.”  Owens\, who has performed at the White House for First Lady Michelle Obama\, dazzles audiences with performances that are full of soul and love well beyond his peers of today. His refined style combining classic soul with a slight modern touch is why audiences everywhere are calling him the new voice of American soul. \nWhat’s Going On: The Marvin Gaye Experience is Brian’s tribute to the legendary artist and includes music selections that span Gaye’s music-making career. Early solo hits like “Can I Get a Witness” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” share space with “You’re All I Need to Get By” and other classic duets. And any Marvin Gaye song list would be incomplete without perennial (and challenging) crowd-pleasers like “Let’s Get It On” or “Got To Give It Up.” \nAt its heart\, Brian’s Marvin Gaye Experience is about “preservation — upholding the tradition of true soul music that is so desperately needed in our culture today.” The show prominently features a suite of pieces from Gaye’s “What’s Going On” album\, counted as “one of the most socially important artistic works in the history of American music.” In light of recent events in and around Ferguson Missouri where he resides\, Brian says the show also speaks to a heightened sense of urgency and the prophetic beauty of Gaye’s 1971 work. \nTickets: Individuals $25\, Seniors (65+) and Military $22. Students $10\, PrivilegesPlus members $20. Group discount rates of $20 each for groups of 10 or more when purchased in advance are available by contacting the box office.  Season Tickets:  Purchase 5 or more events at the same time through our box office to receive a 20% discount off the top ticket price. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=25&v=TbLa2AkA5O8

SUMMARY:Wilmington on Fire Documentary Film
DESCRIPTION:As part of the theater’s “Films That Matter” Series\, a screening of the powerful film “Wilmington on Fire.” \nWilmington on Fire (synopsis): Rosewood has long been infamous\, but Wilmington came first and was even more devastating in its effects. In 1898\, Wilmington was North Carolina’s largest city\, with a majority black population\, a thriving black middle class\, and a biracial Republican-Populist fusion government. On November 10\, an armed mob of Democrat-backed white supremacists opened fire on African American neighborhoods\, slaughtering hundreds and driving thousands out of the city for good. In a five-year passion project that consumed all his resources\, director Christopher Everett amassed rare photographs\, original research\, and testimonies from historians and descendants of the victims to uncover a shocking event that marked a turning point in the politics of the post-Reconstruction South. Film length is 89 minutes. \nA Q&A session with the film’s director\, Christopher Everett\, will follow the screening. \nTickets are $5 with general seating and can be purchased noon-5:30pm weekdays at the theater or at the door. Doors open 5pm for the 6pm screening. Contact the theater at 910-738-4339 for more information.

SUMMARY:Public Dance Workshop with La Patronal
DESCRIPTION:When La Patronal visits the theater on Saturday March 30\, 2019 from Peru to share their authentic Peruvian festival music with a 7pm performance\, they also will be offering a free community dance workshop that afternoon. An amazing opportunity to learn about a different culture! FOLLOW THIS LINK TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE EVENING PERFORMANCE. \nThe workshop is family compatible\, good for beginners and advanced dancers equally and a great way to discover Peruvian culture. Time TBD and announced soon.  Here’s more detail: \nDANCE WORKSHOP\nDescription \n\nIf you want to dive deeper into ancestral Peruvian culture and dance\, join us for a 45-60 minute dance workshop accompanied by dancers and musicians from La Patronal. You will learn three different genres and dances originating in Peru: Traditional Cumbia\, the Dance of the Diablicos of Tucume and Marinera Norteña. \nDance of the Diablicos from Tucume: A religious\, ancestral tradition of Peru\, resulting from the syncretism of Aboriginal and Catholic cultures in the northern coast of Peru. Danced to the beat of a drum and a wooden flute the dance of the Diablicos is a group activity great for breaking the ice and learning about symbols and gestures of Peruvian culture and the encounters and discrepancies between the Inca culture and the Catholic traditions brought into Peru during Spanish colonization. Martin Granados\, dancer at La Patronal is a member and lead Dancer of the Diablicos from Tucume in Lambayeque. \nCumbia: Peruvian Cumbia became popular in the 1960’s after the fusion of Colombian Cumbia\, the local Huayno and and other psychedelic post world war genres. Melodies differ from Colombian cumbia bringing into the music a more Andean style\, following melodic patterns derived from coastal traditions of Peru. It differs from the dance of the Diablicos and from La Marinera by being a more free-style dance\, often performed in couples. \nMarinera Norteña and Tondero: Are coastal dances of Peru with African\, Indigenous and Spanish roots. Known all across Peru because of the graceful and romantic gestures it involves. Dancers use handkerchiefs as props\, reenacting courtship. Damaris Peña\, dancer for La Patronal\, is a National Champion of these genres and will introduce the dances and its differences to the Audience. \nThe workshop is family compatible\, good for beginners and advanced dancers equally and a great way to discover Peruvian culture.
