The consortium is a group of multiple agencies working together since 2020 to decrease the morbidity and mortality of opioid use in the community. Please join us at the esteemed Carolina Civic Center Historic Theater on Thursday August 31\, 2023 from 6-8pm. The admission is free including movie theater snacks for your enjoyment! SUMMARY:Summer Theater Boot Camp
DESCRIPTION:The Carolina Civic Center Historic Theater in downtown Lumberton will hold its “Summer Theater Boot Camp” July 17 through 22. The six-day artistic intensive program\, ending with a culminating revue for friends and family\, will allow campers ages 8 – 16 to develop essential acting skills\, participate in theater games and exercises\, create and act out scenes through improvisation\, dance/movement\, music instruction\, and audition prep/headshots\, among other skills. Along with professionally trained camp instructors\, campers will be under the supervision and artistry of the camp director and theater resident artist\, Kendrix Singletary\, who brings national theater experience to the Civic Center’s stage. \nThe camp will culminate with a Saturday July 22 revue performed for friends and family. \nCost for the camp is $150 per participant. Scholarships are available and provided by a grant through Kiwanis Club of Robeson. \nSibling discounts are available and detailed on the application. Each camper must have a separate application on file. As two young singers with what they call “old souls\,” they both incorporate traditional and contemporary country and gospel into their sound. This has helped them create an instant identity among listeners of all ages. \nUsing their talents to uplift others\, these two travel all around the Southeast\, performing at such notable events as the Carolina Country Music Festival and the Carolina Country Music Awards. Chapman is an established singer/songwriter\, and is the reigning Carolina Country Music Awards’ Entertainer of the Year. Moreover\, Chapman has been awarded several songwriting awards from the World Songwriting Awards and the International Singer-Songwriters Association Awards\, including 2020 Male Single of the Year for his song “Plus One.”  The Catawba College graduate was also selected to be a contestant on season 19 of American Idol. \nRyleigh has wowed many with her powerful vocals and the outstanding way she fully connects to each lyric in a song\, making each listener believe the power behind what she is singing. The husband-and-wife duo of Sarah and Austin McCombie favors rustic\, minimalist acoustic arrangements—mainly clawhammer-style banjo and guitar that showcase deftness and maturity with their songwriting. The duo has a way of connecting with their audiences that is warm and universal. Chatham Rabbits’ first album “All I Want From You” (2019) was recorded with the help of Watchhouse’s Andrew Marlin\, and their sophomore album\, “The Yoke is Easy\, The Burden is Full”\, released May 1\, 2020. \nTheir song “Oxen” was named one of the “Top Folk Songs of 2020″ by Paste Magazine and the band has been covered by Garden & Gun Magazine\, American Songwriter\, and No Depression. Their ingenuity during the Covid-19 crisis led to the building of their own venue\, The Burrow\, and the creation of their mobile concert experience\, The Stay at Home Tour\, which took Chatham Rabbits to 194 neighborhoods in 2020-21. DESCRIPTION:Cornell Gunter’s Coasters\n7pm Friday April 22 \nThe Coasters are an American Rhythm & Blues and rock ‘n’ roll vocal group that had a string of hits in the late 1950s. Beginning with “Searchin” and “Young Blood”\, their most memorable songs were written by the songwriting and producing team Leiber and Stoller. Although the Coasters originated outside of mainstream doowop\, their records were so frequently imitated that they became an important part of the doo wop legacy through the 1960s.  The Coasters’ hits also comprised a major portion of the song score for the 1994 musical revue Smokey Joe’s Café\, a retrospective of Leiber & Stoller songs that received one Grammy Award and seven Tony Award nominations following its 1995 Broadway debut. DESCRIPTION:The Carolina Civic Center Historic Theater in downtown Lumberton will hold a reception 5:30-7pm Thursday April 7 for an exhibit featuring artwork by artist Brianna Goodwin. Emerge: The Art of Brianna Goodwin will be on display March 19 through April 22 in the theater’s main lobby.  In addition to the reception\, the exhibit can be viewed by the public during scheduled events or by appointment. \nBased in rural North Carolina\, Brianna Goodwin began creating floral pieces in her home as a therapeutic exercise\, and has been painting acrylic and mixed media works since 2019. Originally a performing artist\, she blends her love of telling stories with a passion for visual art. \n“Emerge is an exhibit that explores the transformational periods of one’s life\,” said Goodwin. “Throughout the pieces I have paired abstract portraits with symbols of nature and unorthodox brush strokes to reflect the imperfections of our patterns of emerging. Processes such as the changing of seasons from winter to spring or a woman becoming a mother are beautiful\, yet somewhat imperfect in nature. Through these works I hope to convey that however imperfect these life transformations may be\, they are vital to our growth and propensity to reach our truest selves.” \nSoon after Goodwin began sharing her work online\, she received inquiries from viewers interested in purchasing. Since that time\, she has immersed herself into developing her signature style of abstract and impressionistic paintings for her collectors. She has conducted workshops\, created a line of products and seen immeasurable success as a self-taught painter. She is elated to be partnering with the Carolina Civic Center to feature her first full exhibit. \nThe Carolina Civic Center Historic Theater is a beautifully-restored 1928 treasure listed on the National Register of Historic Places that offers visitors a unique and visually stunning experience. Auditions were held in February to determine qualifying contestants to showcase on the theater’s stage.
