SUMMARY:Public Dance Workshop with La Patronal
DESCRIPTION:When La Patronal visits the theater on Saturday March 30\, 2019 from Peru to share their authentic Peruvian festival music with a 7pm performance\, they also will be offering a free community dance workshop that afternoon. An amazing opportunity to learn about a different culture! FOLLOW THIS LINK TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE EVENING PERFORMANCE. \nThe workshop is family compatible\, good for beginners and advanced dancers equally and a great way to discover Peruvian culture. Time TBD and announced soon.  Here’s more detail: \nDANCE WORKSHOP\nDescription \n\nIf you want to dive deeper into ancestral Peruvian culture and dance\, join us for a 45-60 minute dance workshop accompanied by dancers and musicians from La Patronal. You will learn three different genres and dances originating in Peru: Traditional Cumbia\, the Dance of the Diablicos of Tucume and Marinera Norteña. \nDance of the Diablicos from Tucume: A religious\, ancestral tradition of Peru\, resulting from the syncretism of Aboriginal and Catholic cultures in the northern coast of Peru. Danced to the beat of a drum and a wooden flute the dance of the Diablicos is a group activity great for breaking the ice and learning about symbols and gestures of Peruvian culture and the encounters and discrepancies between the Inca culture and the Catholic traditions brought into Peru during Spanish colonization. Martin Granados\, dancer at La Patronal is a member and lead Dancer of the Diablicos from Tucume in Lambayeque. \nCumbia: Peruvian Cumbia became popular in the 1960’s after the fusion of Colombian Cumbia\, the local Huayno and and other psychedelic post world war genres. Melodies differ from Colombian cumbia bringing into the music a more Andean style\, following melodic patterns derived from coastal traditions of Peru. It differs from the dance of the Diablicos and from La Marinera by being a more free-style dance\, often performed in couples. \nMarinera Norteña and Tondero: Are coastal dances of Peru with African\, Indigenous and Spanish roots. Known all across Peru because of the graceful and romantic gestures it involves. Dancers use handkerchiefs as props\, reenacting courtship. Damaris Peña\, dancer for La Patronal\, is a National Champion of these genres and will introduce the dances and its differences to the Audience. \nThe workshop is family compatible\, good for beginners and advanced dancers equally and a great way to discover Peruvian culture.

SUMMARY:Candidates Forum
DESCRIPTION:LUMBERTON — A forum featuring candidates for sheriff and district attorney will be held on April 10 at the Carolina Civic Center in downtown Lumberton.  \nThe nonpartisan event\, which is being sponsored by the Lumberton Area Chamber of Commerce and The Robesonian\, will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the public is welcome to attend. The Civic Center seats 450 people and the first people there will be seated until there is no more room.  \nThe format for the event is still being tweaked\, but it will include questions being presented to the candidates randomly. Each candidate will field the same number of questions\, but all candidates will not be asked the same question. However\, after a question is asked of a candidate\, other candidates will be asked if they would like to weigh in as well.  \nThe candidates will be given a limited amount of time to answer each question.  \nPlans are for the district attorney candidates to go first. There are three who are seeking the seat that is now held by Johnson Britt\, the county’s district attorney since 1994 — Democrats Joe Osman and Matt Scott\, and Republican Allen Adams. Britt is not seeking re-election.  \nThere are five candidates seeking the seat being vacated by Sheriff Kenneth Sealey\, who has held it since being appointed in 2005. They are all Democrats\, Randy Graham\, James Jones\, George Kenworthy\, Burnis Wilkins and Ronnie Patterson. There is no Republican candidate for sheriff.  \nThe questions will be determined by an independent panel. The event will have a master of ceremony\, a moderator who will pose the questions\, and a timer.  \nThe chamber approached The Robesonian about being a sponsor.  \n“We were excited to have the opportunity\,” said Donnie Douglas\, the editor of the paper. “We believe that campaigns should be about ideas and not how many signs can be placed in yards. All eight candidates for both offices are well-qualified\, and we look forward to hearing the candidates provide detail on how they hope to make the county a better and safer place.”  \nThe Robesonian will provide a video live stream of the event on Facebook.  \n“The chamber is delighted to co-sponsor the event. We have very qualified candidates in both of the fields\, and are excited to give them a platform to share their views\,” said Tanner Smith\, a member of the chamber’s Leadership Committee. “We believe the real winner here will be the people of Robeson County who attend or watch the event\, as they will be armed with insightful perspective as they head to the polls.”  \nThe primary is May 8 and the General Election is Nov. 6. \nThe Carolina Civic Center Foundation and theater believes it is important to support and facilitate the exchange of information\, ideas and opinions.  As a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization\, the theater does not advocate for or explicitly support any position.  In the case of political candidates forums\, the theater does not endorse any candidate or party.

SUMMARY:Robeson Rises Documentary Film and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Opponents of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP) will premiere a new short film “Robeson Rises” highlighting the fight against the ACP in Robeson County. The  600-mile pipeline proposed by Duke Energy and Dominion Power plans to bring fracked gas from West Virginia across Virginia and through eight North Carolina Counties\, ending in Pembroke and Prospect in rural Robeson County in the heart of the Lumbee Indian community. \nThe screening on Mar. 22 is presented by EcoRobeson\, Appalachian Voices\, The Carolina Civic Center\, and Working Films. The event is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the event will begin at 6:00 p.m. The theater is located at 315 North Chestnut Street in downtown Lumberton. \nThe screening will be followed by a discussion at 6:30 p.m. with local leaders who will discuss the proposed pipeline’s impact and how other communities have stopped pipelines similar to the ACP.  Members of the local environmental group\, EcoRobeson who are featured in the film will be available for questions and discussion at the premier and after the panel discussion. \n“Robeson Rises” chronicles the efforts of Robeson County residents – Native American\, African American\, and White — uniting against the pipeline and advocating for a non-carbon\, clean energy future. The short film documents the initial phases of community organizing\, public education\, and opposition to the Atlantic Coast Pipeline in one of the most racially diverse rural county in the United States. It includes interviews and footage from public hearings and testimony by featured residents.  As regional energy policy continues to promote carbon-based fossil fuels\, the time to tell this story is now\, while communities across West Virginia\, Virginia\, and North Carolina are still rising up to stop the pipeline before it is built. \nRobie Goins\, a member of the Lumbee Tribe and who is featured in the film\, states that “projects like the ACP affect all people\, even those that don’t live close to the proposed route Methane gas and pipelines are contributors to climate change which impacts our local county and ultimately affects the entire world. For anyone in Robeson County who says that it doesn’t impact them in a direct way is misinformed. This movie illustrates how we can stand up\, even against major odds\, and join together to protect our environment and the quality of our rural life.” \nThe film depicts two disasters to hit Robeson County in the same year: Hurricane Matthew and the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline. \nAdrienne Kennedy is a Hurricane Matthew survivor and leader in the disaster recovery work. She is also a “climate refugee” and understands the connections between rising storms and floods and the proposed pipeline. She states that “the increase in disastrous storms\, floods\, and droughts like Hurricane Matthew are directly related to our abuse of the environment. We have to come to grips with this. We can’t continue to abuse the land that we need to sustain us and our livelihoods. That’s why I’m against this pipeline – because protecting our environment is the most important issue that unites all who are most concerned with our and our children’s future in Robeson County.” \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eke2pHLZKfU

SUMMARY:"Pardons of Innocence: The Wilmington Ten" Documentary and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:“Pardons of Innocence: The Wilmington Ten\,” at 7pm Thursday February 22\, 2018 \nThe Carolina Civic Center Historic Theater\, in partnership with the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA)\, will screen the CashWorks HD Productions documentary “Pardons of Innocence: The Wilmington Ten\,” at 7pm Thursday\, February 22\, followed by a panel discussion about the film. Doors will open 6pm. The theater is located at 315 North Chestnut Street in downtown Lumberton\, NC.  The film is written\, produced and narrated by Cash Michaels\, staff writer for The Wilmington Journal. In addition to the film’s director\, panel discussion members include Rev. Benjamin Chavis\, former national director of the NAACP and member of the “Wilmington Ten.” \nThis special event is free and open to the public but tickets are required. Tickets can be obtained or reserved for pick up through the theater’s box office. Box office is open noon-6pm weekdays for in-person orders or by calling 910-738-4339. \nThe documentary recounts the history surrounding the troubled desegregation of New Hanover County Public schools during the late 1960s through 1971\, which evolved into the false prosecution of eight black male students\, a white female community organizer\, and a fiery civil rights activist\, Rev. Benjamin Chavis\, for protesting racial injustice.  The proud history of Williston Senior High School\, the all-Black school in Wilmington which was unceremoniously closed in 1968\, will also be honored. Against the backdrop of the Wilmington 1898 race massacre and the forced desegregation of Southern schools in the 1960s\, the documentary also traces how the Black Press\, led initially by Wilmington Journal publisher Thomas C. Jervay\, Sr.\, and over 40 years later by his daughter\, publisher-editor Mary Alice Jervay Thatch through the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA)\, ultimately pushed for\, and achieved the official exoneration of the Wilmington Ten. \nSpecial appearances in the film include the Rev. Dr. Benjamin Chavis\, Jr.\, leader of the Wilmington Ten; Joseph McNeil – Williston Senior High School alumnus and a member of the Greensboro Four who integrated a downtown Greensboro F. W. Woolworth store in 1960; Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright\, pastor emeritus of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago\, and one of the ministers who lobbied Gov. James Hunt in 1977 to pardon the Wilmington Ten; and former Gov. Beverly Perdue\, who ultimately pardoned the Wilmington Ten in Dec. 2012. \nThe documentary –which premiered in 2014- has also been released on DVD for public schools – grades 9 through 12 (with academic guide); colleges and universities\, and the general public. \nThe NNPA\, also known as “The Black Press of America\,” is a 74-year-old federation of more than 200 black community newspapers across the United States. In 2011\, led by The Wilmington Journal\, the NNPA\, and NNPA Foundation led by Dorothy Leavell\, publisher of Chicago Crusader\, adopted seeking pardons of innocence for the Wilmington Ten as a project. \nThe Carolina Civic Center Historic Theater is a beautifully-restored treasure listed on the National Register of Historic Places that offers visitors a unique and visually stunning experience. The theater is located at 315 North Chestnut Street in the heart of downtown Lumberton.  First opened in 1928 as a vaudeville and silent film house\, the theater offers a wide array of programming including live touring performances\, original productions\, art exhibits\, films\, special events and rentals. SUMMARY:Comedian James Gregory
DESCRIPTION:7:30pm Friday January 26\, 2018\nComedian James Gregory \nJames Gregory\, often referred to as “The Funniest Man in America\,” returns to the Carolina Civic Center Historic Theater in downtown Lumberton on January 26 for one performance only.  Tickets $28 or $35 Middle Front (limited quantity). TICKETS GO ON SALE WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 22! \nTicketing Information\nTickets can be purchased in-person or by  telephone with credit card or cash 1-5pm Monday through Friday through our administrative offices in the theater’s second floor (enter on Fourth Street side)\, or by calling the Civic Center at 910-738-4339. Tickets can also be purchased at the door. Theater lobby box office opens for ticket sales one hour prior to performance. \nMore about James Gregory\nWhile his routines include such Southern subjects as covered-dish suppers\, road trips to Stuckey’s\, and the healthy aspects of fried foods\, it’s a mistake to consider him a regional comic. Says Gregory\, “To me\, Southern comedians are guys who get onstage and talk about pickup trucks\, rifle racks and cow-tipping. I don’t talk about the South; I just deliver my material with a Southern accent. My comedy is based on the real life-the people I grew up with. My notions about food came from them. They all eat fried foods and many of them are in their eighties. Meanwhile you read in the news how some health nut kicked the bucket jogging on the way home from the health food store.”Gregory\, as much a Southern story-teller as comic\, is known for a style that breaks from political correctness and much of his humor is centered on brilliant observations of crazy relatives and people obsessed with the slightest change in weather conditions. He delights in poking fun at modern sensitive parents and out-of-control environmentalists. For over two decades\, the unforgettable caricature of veteran comedian James Gregory has stood grinning: his shirt un-tucked\, his arms outstretched\, a carefree welcome to a down-home\, hilarious comedy experience. It’s storytelling at its best. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPiMQz3CSDk   \n
